Cost is the first question on every family's mind and the last thing most agencies put in writing. Here's the honest picture.
The ballpark
Companion and homemaker care in Florida is billed by the hour. Long-term care cost surveys put the state average at roughly $30 an hour, with real quotes landing above or below that depending on where you live and how much care you need. Metro areas tend to run higher than smaller towns.
What moves the price
- Hours per week. More hours usually means a better hourly rate.
- When care happens. Weekends and holidays can carry a premium.
- Consistency. A steady, predictable schedule is easier to staff, and that shows up in the price.
- Location. The same visit costs different amounts in Miami and in Punta Gorda.
How families actually pay
Most companion care is private pay. Two things worth checking before you assume it's all out of pocket:
- Long-term care insurance often covers homemaker and companion services. Look for that exact wording in the policy.
- Veterans' benefits. The VA's Aid & Attendance benefit can help eligible veterans and surviving spouses pay for care at home.
One thing to know upfront: original Medicare does not pay for companion-only care. Anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something.
Start smaller than you think
You don't need 40 hours a week to feel the difference. Many of our families start with a few hours, two or three days a week, and adjust from there. You only pay for the time you actually use.
